Why I picked up this book:

I was looking for erotica from a reliable publisher.

Blurb:

Jessica’s life was in ruins…until she met him.
Standing in the rain feeling lost in a new city, with no job and no prospects, she’s about to give up. Until Dane Rainier pulls up in his limo and offers her a ride—and sweeps her into the life of her dreams. Now she has a high-powered job and is having the best sex of her life, exploring her submissive side under the masterful hand of a gorgeous billionaire.
But there’s a part of her that’s still holding back. Because the truth is, she’s never gotten over her ex-boyfriend Storm. A heavily muscled, motorcycle-riding rock musician, Storm couldn’t be any more different from Dane… and she just can’t get him out of her head.
Now Storm is about to reappear and turn her whole world upside down. Both Dane and Storm make her body burn to be possessed, but will her indecisive heart cost her the love of both men?
My thoughts:

His to Possess was originally published in a serial format, six parts that have been brought together into this single title. As such, there are cliffhanger arcs that remain and I think work surprisingly well in a sort of episodic-within-the-whole way. I think in this case, Carew wrote a surprisingly plot-ful erotic novel and the serialization emphasizes this.

The sex in this book is well-written. There's a variety of encounters with a range of kink and because of the original format, the scenes are spread out evenly across the book so that the book as a whole has a fairly even distribution. Also, I particularly liked that even with the BDSM flavour, Jessica's a willing, curious and enthusiastic participant. There's no sense of coercion or pushing her boundaries past her comfort zone, which was pretty welcome.

In terms of character, I wasn't sure what it was about Jessica that captivated both Dane and Storm. I think this was the weakest part for me - not knowing what made the main character as alluring as she was made out to be. Dane and Storm both had obvious appeal, though I think Dane's character became a little looser towards the end of the story to suit the plot.

The billionaire playboy thing is a getting played out for me, but I think it worked in this story. The boss - personal assistant connection was leveraged in some fun ways, and I think the money was used as window dressing rather than as a crutch in place of real conflict/real story.

Finally, I'd like to read Melanie's story, as I assume there will be one.

Bottom line:

Ultimately, I enjoyed His to Possess and I think the pros outweighed the cons fairly significantly. It was successful on all the points that I want erotica to be successful, and I will even watch for a sequel.

4 stars
For fans of erotica with BDSM components, serialized erotica, billionaires
